Special
Programs
ACCELERATED READER PROGRAM
Accelerated reader is a motivational program that supports reading
instruction in grades 2 - 5. Each student has a quarterly goal to achieve
based on his/her ability. The goals are reachable, but challenging. As
goals are met each marking period, students will be recognized and/or
rewarded. Students choose their own books from the AR
Reading List and read at their own pace. They keep records
of all books read, and teacher use these "logs" to monitor progress and
to determine independent reading grades.
SUMMER READING
During the summer students can keep their reading skills sharp by
reading and recording the books they have read on their summer reading
brochures. A special program is held in the fall to celebrate their accomplishments.

software that supports and expands upon the core curriculum. Each classroom
and the computer lab are networked and have access to the Internet. Internet
research takes place in a structured environment supervised by teachers.
A filtering program, I-Gear, is in place to prevent students from accidentally
connecting to objectionable web sites. Technology Newsletter . Requires Adobe

RECYCLING INK CARTRIDGES
We participate in the technology fund raising program sponsored by Cartridge World by collecting empty inkjet and laser printer cartridges from our community. Collected cartridges will earn the school money to be spent on technology materials and supplies. Please put all cartridges in Ziploc bags when you send them to school.

CHARACTER APPROACH TO PROBLEM SOLVING (CAPS)
|
Meet
Cappy |
The
CAPS program was developed at Arrowhead and is the model character program for the Va. Beach school system. Each month a character
trait is encouraged. |
REFLECTION PROGRAM
The PTA promotes this program to encourage students to become acquainted
with the arts. Students may interpret the theme (a new one is given each
year) through music, visual arts or literature.
NEW STUDENT "WELCOME"
Periodically "new" students are recognized. They are assigned to a
student host and encouraged to become an active member of the AES student
body.
BIRTHDAY RECOGNITION
"If you have a birthday today, please come down to the security desk."
That's what you hear everyday over the loud speaker at Arrowhead. If it's
your "special day", you get a birthday pencil and a greeting from the
security staff. Weekend and summer birthdays are also recognized.
WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY READERS
Students are selected by their teacher and the reading resource teacher
to read a portion of their favorite book during morning
announcements on Wednesday.
PARTNERS IN EDUCATION
In recent years the community has become more involved with schools.
Currently Arrowhead has nine Business Partners: Sentara Village, Burger
King at Arrowhead, C & M Cafeteria, USS San Jacinto, Kentucky Fried
Chicken on Newtown Rd., CAL'Z Pizza on Princess Anne Rd., Kempsville Fire
Department, Atlantic Chem-Dry, and McDonald's on Newtown Rd. Sentara Village
has been recognized as one of the three best partnerships in the city.
All of Arrowhead's partners provide services to the school and recognize
student accomplishment throughout the year.
AETV
Arrowhead has its own "television station". Student anchors deliver the morning announcements live over our close circuit system. Other segments include guest pledge leaders, Wonderful Wednesday Readers, Students of the Month, CAPS skits and songs, Today in History, and the Math Facts of the Day.
