Period Beginning:
January 29, 2008
Parents,
The following topics are being introduced to your child during the next
grading period. This list is for your information; you may wish to discuss
some of the topics with your child as they are being presented in class.
In addition, other material may be covered as time allows.
Language Arts:
- Concentration on the letters and sounds of: Rr, Ll, Dd, Gg, Oo, Kk, Ww
- High Frequency Words (Vocabulary)/ Use in reading and writing/it, but, look, see, my, we, little, have.
- Blend sounds to make words (example: c-a-t = cat)
- Identify onset (/c/) and rime (/at/) in reading and writing
- Identify beginning and ending sounds in words
- Differentiate between a letter/word/ sentence
- Recall details of text and sequence three events by beginning, middle and end
- Read using: pictures, meaning, beginning letters, text pattern and known words
- Retell familiar stories including main idea, details, characters and setting
- Identify text as fact or fiction, informational or make believe
- Write first and last name correctly (proper upper and lower case mix)
- Begin to use spacing, capitalization and punctuation in independent writing
- Be able to “read” own written message
- Write using some known words and beginning sounds in independent writing
- Read and write from left to right correctly pointing to words
- Participate voluntarily in discussions, songs, etc and recite songs, poems, etc.
Math:
- Count to 100+ by 1’s, by 5’s and by 10’s
- Skip count by 2’s to 10+
- Read and write numbers to 50+
- Continue and develop 3-part patterns
- Use correct tools for measuring, including those for volume
- Tell time to the hour (analog and digital)
- Make a simple bar graph and share observations
- Understand simple fractions: ½, ¼
- Know values of penny, nickel and dime
- Count on from any number 2-20+
- Identify ordinal positions first, middle or last through fifth
