child during the next grading period. This list is for your information;
you may wish to discuss some of the topics with your child as they
are being presented in class. In addition, other material may be
covered as time allows.
Language Arts:
- Writing descriptive, narrative, and persuasive pieces using the writing process, Making Inferences, Inferring Main Idea, Author’s Viewpoint, Homophones, Singular and Plural Nouns and Possessive Nouns, Vowel + r Sounds, Combining Sentences, Suffixes, Supporting Details, Summarizing, Prefixes, Common and Proper nouns, Poetry, Outlines, Metaphors, Similes, Personification, Noting Details, Adjectives, Vowel Sounds in shout and wall, Compare and Contrast, Synonyms, Antonyms, Inflected Forms, Predicting Outcomes, Multiple Meaning Words, Action Verbs, and Linking Verbs

Studies:

Some of the topics within each unit are listed below:
- Impact of the arrival of Africans to the Jamestown settlement
- How tobacco growing encouraged slavery
- How immigrants influenced the cultural landscape
- Areas inhabited by various cultural groups
- Place names reflecting culture- ex. Richmond- English
- Money, barter, credit, debt, and savings
- Colonial Virginia had no banks
- Relocation of Virginia’s capital
- Reasons why colonists went to war with England
- Contribution of Patrick Henry
- Role of Virginians in the Revolutionary War- George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry
- Important victory at Yorktown
- James Madison’s role with the Constitution
- Ideas of George Mason and Thomas Jefferson as expressed in the Virginia Declaration of Rights and the Virginia Statue for Religious Freedom
- Role of Virginia in the establishment of the new American nation
Science
- Oceans unit- Students will know and use terms associated with the unit, explain the formation of ocean currents, analyze how physical characteristics of the ocean affect where marine organisms can live, recognize phytoplankton as the base of the ocean ecosystem, describe how plate tectonics has formed different features of the ocean floor, explain the impact that humans have on the ocean and its life forms, and understand the importance of the oceans to humans.
- Matter unit- Students will know and use terms associated with the unit, explain that all matter is made of particles that are too small to be seen with the naked eye, explain that all matter is made up of more that over 100 known elements, describe the formation of a compound, summarize the similarities and differences between mixtures and solutions, elements and compounds, and atoms and molecules, and compare and contrast physical and chemical changes in matter.
