Topics of Study for Grade 4
Nine-Week Period Beginning: January 29, 2008

Parents,

The following topics are being introduced to your child during the next grading period. This list is for your information; you may wish to discuss some of the topics with your child as they are being presented in class. In addition, other material may be covered as time allows.

Language Arts:

  • recognize characteristics of fiction, identify characteristics of pattern poetry, elements of fiction, text organization/ format of non-fiction, identify and define idioms, recognize main idea in non-fiction, explain author’s purpose, distinguish fact from opinion, features of poetry, write pattern poetry, friendly letter, pattern story, descriptive piece with multiple paragraphs, journal/quick writes, use variety of leads and closings, write a report of 2 or more paragraphs using two sources, write poetry to include moods and feelings, write story using elements of fiction, analogies: rhyming, homophones, antonyms, parts to whole, example to category, synonyms, use dictionary key and pronunciation key, find information in an almanac or atlas, suffixes: -ful, -ly, -ion,  prefixes: dis-, in-, mis-, re-, words with silent consonants: kn, gn, wr, mb

Math:

  • Fractions and Their Uses
  • Chance and Probability
  • Big Numbers
  • Estimation and Computation
  • Reflections and Symmetry

Social Studies:

  • Southeast Region of the United States
  • Virginia: History and Geography

Science:

  • Investigating Electricity
  • Investigating Plants and Life Processes

Spelling:  The students are working spelling words that are appropriate for their own level of development.

Health: DARE, Basic Needs

  • Keep reading and studying multiplication and division facts!
